ความหมายย่อมาจาก desktop publishing ซึ่งแปลว่า การจัดพิมพ์ (หรือการจัดเตรียมต้นแบบของเอกสารสิ่งพิมพ์ ) ด้วยคอมพิวเตอร์แบบตั้งโต๊ะ หมายถึง การนำภาพและข้อความมาจัดวางไว้ด้วยกันบนจอภาพ ในตำแหน่งที่สวยงาม ดูแล้วสบายตา มักใช้เป็นต้นแบบ (ต้นฉบับที่จะนำไปผลิตต่อ) ของเอกสารสิ่งพิมพ์ อธิบายง่าย ๆ ก็คือ การจัดเตรียมต้นฉบับเอกสารสิ่งพิมพ์โดยใช้เครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์แบบตั้งโต๊ะ (desktop computer) แทนที่จะเป็นการ "ตัดปะ" อย่างสมัยก่อน อย่างไรก็ตาม ก็ต้องใช้โปรแกรมช่วย โปรแกรมที่นิยมใช้กันมาก คือ PageMaker และ QuarkXpress การจัดเตรียมเอกสารสิ่งพิมพ์ด้วยวิธีนี้ จะช่วยลดค่าใช้จ่ายได้มากทีเดียว และเป็นที่นิยมมากในปัจจุบัน
